"How much does a private ambulance cost?" is one of the questions we are asked most. The honest answer is that there is no single price, because every patient and every journey is different. This guide explains what drives the cost of private ambulance and non-emergency patient transport in the UK so you can compare quotes sensibly.
What affects the price
- The level of care needed. A wheelchair accessible vehicle with a driver and escort costs less to run than an ambulance with a stretcher and a trained crew. Higher-dependency journeys need more skilled staff and equipment.
- Distance and journey time. Long-distance patient transfers need more crew time, fuel and sometimes comfort breaks or a second driver.
- Waiting time. If the vehicle waits at a hospital appointment and brings the patient back, the waiting time is part of the price. A single one-way journey is cheaper than wait and return or a return on another day.
- Time of day. Early starts, evenings, weekends and bank holidays can cost more.
- Special equipment. Oxygen, bariatric equipment, stair-climbing chairs or extra crew all affect the quote.
- Access and stairs. If the patient lives up several flights of stairs, extra staff may be needed to move them safely.
Why a mileage-only quote can be misleading
Some firms quote only by the mile. That can look cheap but may leave out waiting time, extra crew or equipment, which then appear on the final bill. At Westron Care our quotes follow a risk assessment of the patient's needs rather than a mileage guess, so the price you are given reflects the real journey.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the price fixed, and what could change it on the day?
- Is waiting time, a return journey or parking included?
- Is the company registered with the Care Quality Commission and fully insured?
- How many crew will attend, and are they trained in moving and handling?
- What is the cancellation policy?
Could the journey be free on the NHS?
Some patients qualify for free NHS non-emergency patient transport because of their medical condition. This is arranged through a GP or hospital team. If you do not qualify, or need a more flexible time, a private service may help. Read our guide on private ambulance vs NHS patient transport.
